How to calculate average fasting duration

Work out a fasting average in minutes, understand why missing logs and long entries distort it, and compare like-for-like reporting periods.

Average fasting duration is the total duration of the included finished sessions divided by the number of those sessions. It describes the entries in that period. It is not a recommended target for your next session.

Calculate in minutes first

Suppose three sessions last 12 hours 30 minutes, 13 hours 45 minutes and 14 hours 15 minutes.

Convert them to minutes: 750, 825 and 855. The total is 2,430 minutes. Divide by three to get 810 minutes, which is 13 hours and 30 minutes.

Do not treat 12 hours 30 minutes as 12.30 decimal hours. Thirty minutes is 0.5 hours. Working in minutes avoids that conversion mistake.

Include the actual results

Reset’s average includes finished sessions that ended before their targets. A target miss is still a real recorded interval.

An active session is not yet a finished entry. If today’s interval is still running, do not expect it to contribute to the completed-session average.

Check for misleading inputs

A forgotten stop can add an unusually long session and raise the average. Missing shorter entries can also make a record look longer than the real routine.

Inspect individual sessions before concluding the routine changed. Correct an accidentally long entry and add only past sessions you can record reliably.

Compare equivalent views

Compare seven days with seven days, and remember that a rolling period moves as the date changes. Comparing one busy workweek with several months answers a different question.

The same average can also hide different patterns. Sessions of 10 and 18 hours average 14 hours, just like two 14-hour sessions. The routines are plainly different even though the mean matches.

Use the weekly review to look at actual starts and finishes alongside the average. A larger value is not inherently healthier, and a timer cannot use it to assess whether you are meeting your nutritional needs.
