14:10 vs 16:8: where do the extra two hours go?

Compare 14:10 and 16:8 around breakfast, dinner and work breaks, with exact timing examples and advice for reading mixed-target history.

Changing from 14:10 to 16:8 extends the fasting interval by two hours and shortens the eating interval by two. Where those hours land depends on which meal time stays fixed.

Same dinner, different morning

If dinner ends at 8 pm, a 14-hour interval ends at 10 am and a 16-hour interval ends at noon. A work break at 10:30 am fits the first timetable but falls before the second target.

If you keep breakfast at 10:30 am, the actual interval is 14 hours and 30 minutes. Recording that accurately is more useful than rounding it up to 16.

Same morning, different dinner

For a 9 am first meal, the previous endpoint would be 7 pm for 14:10 and 5 pm for 16:8. This is why advice to simply add two hours can overlook family dinner, travel time or an evening shift.

You could move both endpoints, but then both meals change. A new schedule should be written out in full so that this tradeoff is visible.

Which is better?

The clock alone cannot establish which schedule is better for health, or whether either is appropriate. These labels do not specify food quality, sufficient intake, medication needs or individual circumstances. Discuss dietary changes with a clinician and review the safety context.

For practical comparison, ask which timetable accommodates the meals and responsibilities you already have. Avoid choosing a longer interval merely because a shorter one appears easy to complete.

How to compare your records

Reset lets you record different targets, so keep the intended target attached to each session. A 15-hour session is above a 14-hour target and below a 16-hour target. That explains a different completion outcome without implying a different health result.

When reviewing a mixed week, consider start time, end time and actual duration. Our mixed-target history guide shows a worked example.
